Hello - I'm about to order a carb kit & water pump kit to get my 9.9hp ready for the year. I just wanted to be sure I had the right year.

CJ10RCDB - model
C8212578 - serial

I know it's a Canadian rope start, but I can't find what the suffix "DB" stands for. I think its a 1978 based on the last two numbers of the serial. All help is appreciated, especially if you know what "DB" is. I just don't want to order the wrong parts.

Also, do I need to get a lower unit seal kit since I'm changing the impeller, or is that only if water is in the lower's oil?

Re: Johnson 9.9hp

Stop the train! I make that out to be a 1986. Goes like this:
I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
CJ10RCDB
C - Canadian Made (so am I)
J - Johnson
10- 9.9
R- Rope Start
CD - (19) 86
B - Revision

Would suggest you drain the leg and see how much (if any) water is present. Water comes out first when the leg is vertical, so pay close attention. If there is a whole lot you should do a pressure and vacuum test on the leg and determine where the leak is. Normally you would not have to re-seal the leg unless water is in the oil. Put new washers on the drain and vent plugs as that is where most legs get water from. You can look at the link below and see your leg and all the part numbers but I always give the dealer the year and let him take care of the numbers. Make sure you have all the parts on the prop shaft and lots of grease. Best of luck. Rick.
