i have a 2001 90 hp johnson with about 50 hrs on it. when i run it at 3/4 throttle or above, the water temp light comes on and the safety feature that protects the engine kicks in (the name escapes me at the moment). the water coming out the pisser is cool, and no obstructions at the water intake on the lower unit. i talked to a mechanic and he thought grass could have been sucked up in the water system, clogging the thermostat. he said to unscrew the screws next to the thermostat and clean the springs. does this sound right? also, i cant find the thermostat to try this.

Look for the hoses that come out from each head. They go to the tstat housing. Before you remove anything I strongly recommend that you buy the factory shop (and parts) manual for your motor. It will pay for itself the first time you mess with your motor.

You are about due for a new impeller for the water pump (or replace the complete pump).
