I'm looking about for an outboard for my '72 17' SmokerCraft, T-bird and this Johnson looks like a possiblitiy but the ad doensn't state a year. Before I make any inquiries, can any of you date this motor? Is it oil injectcted or just mix it in the fuel tank? Which system is better? Any other common issues with these motors or overall opinions would be helpfull and appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Johnson 90

I have no idea however it is at least a 1986 based on the engine cover shape....... I am a huge fan of the V-4

Oil injected is nice unless the pump goes then you convert to an older pump and use pre-mix (cheaper then replacing the original pump)

The skeg appears to be in nice shape and not beat up

I would ask the owner about the year..... anything 85 and newer is a prop rated HP motor.... 90 at the prop

Great motors.....check the compression, ask about the impellar........ It will be nice power for your boat.

Re: Johnson 90

edit: Oops, after taking a 2nd look at the photo I see that the cowling is shaped different than my '81 (hard to see that in the photo without paying attention), so it's probably newer than that as Bob stated.

Do a compression check before you buy it, mine still has 110 - 120 PSI in all 4 cylinders. Also drain a few drops of oil from the gearcase, make sure you don't see any water.

You can do a search on google for: johnson 115 decals. It will lead you to the ebay site, where there are many, many decal sets listed by year. I'd guess the decals in your pic is from the 1984-ish time frame. Or post the model #, as Boobie indicated-that's the definitive way to identify it.
