IMG_20150426_090900406_HDR.jpg I have, according to a internet search, a 1984 Johnson 90 HP outboard. The boat was given to me and is the first boat I have ever owned or worked on. I am trying to get the motor ready to lift off the transom and have everything disconnected except these two wires that I am assuming are the tilt and trim wires. I don't see any way to disconnect them (and I can't even get a decent picture of the top wire) with the motor attached to the boat. Do I need to lift the motor off to gain access from the backside or should I be able to get the wires off with it still on the boat. According to the tag this motor is model J90MLCRD if that helps. Thanks in advance :)

If your motor came from the factory with trim and tilt you do not need to disconnect the wires in your picture !---------You will have to find the connecter in the wires that come from the control box and trim guage ( if installed )-- so just follow the wires from the boat that go under the cowling.-----Not hard to do !

Those two wires may feed the gauge on the dash that shows the trim position....If so, and you don't want to cut the wires-you can always remove the trim sender from the engine, then re-assemble it when you re-install the engine. Or-you can always cut them and re-splice them later.

????----Find the connecter for that under the cowling, that might be the easiest approach for trim guage wires..

Following the wires back through the splash pan was the answer to disconnecting them, had to cut several zip ties to separate them from the others and one of the connectors is cracked so I will replace that when I put stuff back together. On this boat the battery (or rather the battery terminals since the battery is missing) and a junction box are at the rear under the splash pan and that is where I found the connectors. Thanks for the quick help :joyous:
