Johnson bad seal??

I just started my Johnson 1984 155hp twins today.<br />When water was attached and motors running, there was water leaking from seal between lower unit and shaft. Is this normal? Should there be a complete seal? Both motors did the same thing, I never noticed before. Is this normal???

Hi Michael<br /><br />I guess you ran it on earmuffs as you could see the water. I think there inst any gasket there on most outboards. I sometimes put fluid gasket on when putting lowe4r unit back, but dont know if its correct. When fed on earmuffs waterpump gets much more water in, and an older pump often leaks at shaft. You will see water leaking from drainholes in front as well. If cooling correct and lots of pressure from tell tale everything should be OK.
