I think you need to look carefully at the parts lists for the 6 and 8 hp engines to see if there are any differences that you have overlooked.
I know I cannot realistically convert my older 6 into a 8 by swapping carbs. I forget all the reasons now but it was inlet manifold, leafplate related maybe even porting. I am not saying it was impossible just not worth it.
EDIT:
The cylinder and crankcase assemblies are different part numbers for the 6 & 8 so there is a fundamental difference there somewhere. For you to go through the whole parts list for that group and find the differences.
