I have an '85 Johnson 8 h.p. outboard wth idle problems. Motor starts first pull but will not continue idling without some choke. Runs for a minute or so with choke in, then starts to falter. Pulling on some choke immediately revives the revs, and it appears the motor will run all day with some choke. I have tried setting the idle screw as per previous postings, but this makes no difference.
No air leaks; fuel pump kit installed; no change by pumping priming bowl; When I removed the cabureter and cleaned all the orifices I found a small section of perished rubber hose with id aprox 1/8" (about the size of bicycle valve rubber, for those of you old enough to remember what that is) in the lower (float) section.
Can anyone please tell me what this piece of rubber does (or in this case "did"), and if I can find a piece the same size where to put it? Or any other suggestions to help with the idle problem?
