Johnson Command center problem

my 1976 johnson command center goes into forward gear but will not go back in to neutral or reverse, stops hard just before neutral...any ideas

also tried opening the control up and got the lower smaller cover off but not the larger cover, all bolts are out except the ones that mount it to the boat...do they have to come out too...and if i get it open is their any springs or anything i need to be aware of or parts that will fly out that need timed going back together

i have confirmed its the control by taking the cables off and manually putting it in reverse at the motor

I once had a Johnson command center until the triangle thing in the middle sheared off while approaching the dock, though, luckily I was able to shut the engine down since the engine was still stuck in forward gear. Yours seems to look like it is in good shape, but good to keep in mind.

Anyway, the mounting bolts do need to come out for you to be able to access the parts behind the larger cover. Nothing should fall out unless it is a broken piece that is causing your problem.

Here is an exploded part diagram and list of all the parts inside the box for what to expect once opening it up and if you find the faulty part, most of the parts are still available to purchase for replacement.

For some reason the hyperlink is not working but go to ********** and find your engine year, model #, and HP, then go to the Remote Control link for the diagram.

For example, my engine was a 1975 Johnson 115. So go to Johnson outboard parts>1975>HP/model#(115ETL75E)>remote control

This is the same control box that you have so you can follow the same steps.

yea took the mounting bolts off and it came apart...now how to the the shifter mechanism out..i think the problem is in there..?
