Johnson Control box/shift problems

It looks likt the control box for my 1990 Johnson 120 HP has just plain worn out. It has always been hard to shift since I've owned it (~1 yr) but the nylon cogs on the shift cam actually broke off (part now "obsolete"). I was able to find one on e-bay and replaced it along with the cables but it is still really hard to shift and I'm afraid that I'm just going to break it again. The cable moves freely when disconnected and I can shift onto forward and reverse with a screwdriver if I get the right pry point. It seems like there is still a lot of slop in the shift cams, but it's hard to judge because the case has to be open to see it. So, the question is, before I go out and buy a new box, am I missing something? Is there a lube point for the shift mechanism at the engine or something else that might make the shift easier? Anybody know of a source for used control boxes? Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem not 2 weeks ago, but there was no stiffness in my shifting.

You can find used controls on Ebay, sometimes you get lucky. I ended up getting the worn out dogs instead. You can put some light grease on the inner workings if they are dry looking and there should be a way to grease the shift lever on the motor.

Thanks, I'll keep looking for one.

I just had another thought. Since I replaced parts in the control box, I've never tried to shift with motor running. I sit possible that the gears in the lower unit aren't meshing properly without any rotation?

It should slide in and out of gear without it running, not sure though.

That's what I figured as well, but you never know. Is there anything in the gearcase tha would cause hard shifting (as opposed to no shifting)? As I say, I can shift with a big screwdriver without that much pressure, I just don't know what "normal" feels like. Hopefully, replacing the remote control box will get me the traction I need, I just hate the thought of replacing it and having this happen all over again.

Have someone turn the prop while you shift. (motor not running of course)

I'll try that whenb I get back on Friday and let you know. Meanwhile, I think I've found a replacement that I can hopefully get by this weekend.

Thanks
