Johnson Controls for Mercury Outboard

Hi All,

I'm swapping over all my components to a new hull. I currently have a 1988 80hp Merc with binnacle controls on a center console. The new boat will need side mount controls so the current ones won't work. I've seen universal controls that work with all motors. I have 3 sets of J/E dual lever side mount controls in my collection of boat stuff. Is there any reason I can't purchase teleflex 3300 series cables, put the OMC ends at the control box and Merc ends on the motor end? I have power trim and I'll just mount a switch on the dash for that.

Thanks

Usually the throw or reach,push/pull are different.
You can try.But don't expect them to work right.
Unless your universal controls have markings on the holes that identify the use of the unit.

Figure out who made the shifter and contact them with this question. They might tell you what to do to make them work.

I was going to compare the throw on the 2 sets before I even attempted anything. I know that's critical. I just didn't know if anyone else ever had any success in trying this idea. Thanks for the info Jerry. I need new cables anyway.

You are using standard Johnnyrude dual lever controls? If so, I think the shifter will probably work. I think the throttle will work backwards. If I remember correctly (40+ years), the Johnny's pushed the throttle open, and the Mercs pulled the throttle open.
BTW- Single lever controls are very likely not compatable....

Ain't gonna work. The "universal" controls have multiple connection points for the cables, usually marked as Merc and OMC. They are on opposite sides of the handle throws...

This was probably not my best idea ever.
