Hi,

Just doing some work on the boat today, a 1967 Starcraft Jet 15' footer from what I found out the other day and not 16 foot. LOL or may e I should measure and not believe a half torn info plate.

Anyways, for the motor controls I've got something that looks like this;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Johnson-out..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item19d48e86a9&vxp=mtr

Now I hate, specially when I'm coming up to the ramp or dock that I need to shift forward, neutral or reverse and then control the gas. It also shifts really hard and sometimes being new at this, I forget and shift without lowering the rpms below half down from full throttle. Now I see some starcraft boats with just one controller like this;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRP-Johnson..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item337af74401&vxp=mtr

So that said, can I convert my 33 1969 Johnson outboard to use the second one from the links above. How do I shift forward and backwards, is it a level or buttons on the handle or something. Can someone explain if that is even possible to have easier shift or automatic shift?

Thank you

Re: Johnson controls

the old type with 2 levers i have never used but the next model up is a single lever, netrual is when the lever is straight up then to engage a gear you pull up on the lock and push the lever forwards and that engages the gear then push further forwards and the engine revs up. if you pull back the lever will go to the netrual position then stop until you pull up on the lock. the design will also stop you from reving the engine while not in gear and only slightly revs the engine in reverse. the controller also has a starting lever that gives a small ammount of throttle for starting this also locks the lever until you push the starting lever back down
i dont believe the brp one will work that you have linked to.

Re: Johnson controls

im not sure if your motor is technically a red plug model. maybe a mod can move this to the johnson forum as they would know if the motor is and the best way to retro fit a newer style controller

I see, well I don't have to go with the newest and bad a** stuff lol but one lever would make things easier.

I do also apologize for putting this in here not in the engine area and if the admins could move that I would greatly appreciate it. Now for all the engine people, anyone know of any controllers around for a 33 or 34 1969 Johnson with one lever?

it just takes getting used to. Use that money for something else.

Re: Johnson controls

why would you? I've never heard of a temp guage on an motor that old and small. Nor is there any reason to have a speedometer, except for fun. They hook up independent of the motor; ifyou have a gps use that. The only guage you need is the fuel guage.

Re: Johnson controls

under the cowl of the motor see if you have a plug that looks like the one in the pic. evinrude and johnson used this style plug for many years and the controller could be plugged into any motor that had the red plug.

the fun thing with owning a boat is like a car you can add what ever you like or want. if you realy want a temp gauge then theres no reason you can not have one. most people dont bother because theres a temp switch on the motor that will sound a buzzer if the motor gets to hot warning you that theres a problem. as for a speedo i would go with home cookin and look at a gps/depth unit as the ones that go on the transom are realy a guide to speed rather than a accurate reading (mines 8mph out at 45mph) so gps is better and the cost between the two isnt to much diffrence and as a bonus you get depth/fish finder/water temp in the same unit. (black and white ones are being sold used as people are upgrading to color)

i havent worked on pre 1970 models which is why im unsure of the plug on them

Re: Johnson controls

The controls, with the proper cable ends should work fine. As for the plug issue? who cares. If your current setup has the key switch and choke on the dash, you can continue using them and just use the new control box for gearshift and throttle.

I would suspect that as a 1967 it may be electric shift.

I don't think I have ever seen a single lever, duel cable control that will work on the op's engine. But, I will be the first to admit that there are a lot of things that I have not seen.
