johnson electromatic shift control - 3 wires from the front?

I have a control box like the one in the picture, also has a 5 feet wire coming from it from the front with 3 wires to a rectangular white connector, what is that for?

That's the shift cable to the engine. There should be a matching connector from the engine.

There are two versions. The older one is for Selectric gearcases where Green if for Forward and Blue is for Reverse. The newer one is for Hydroelectic gearcases where Green is for Neutral, and Green and Blue are for Reverse. Red is 12v+
