i put a 78 evinrude and 1979 johnson 115 hp together. The lower unit and electronics from the 79 went onto the 78. It started right up and ran well.
The problem im having is that it doesn't seem to want to go into reverse. I had the same problem on the 79 when it was together and running, but it fixed before it broke so I know its not the lower unit. I think maybe the cable needs to be adjusted more, but it goes to WOT and nuetral when the shifter is placed there. The problem on the 79 to fix it was the clamp where the shaft with the eye comes up was broken. The one on the 78 doesn't appear to be broken, but if it was lose could it cause the problem or no? Sometimes it will go into reverse and then pop back out.
Also, i was having a problem with the idle. It seems too low.. if its warm and comes back from WOT and then i put it in nuetral, it will eventuall stall out. Although, it seems to be sort of dependant on the trim and tilt posistion. The carbs were rebuilt and adjusted, so i know its not them. I know the idle was turned down alot while the cables were being adjusted, but i don't have a way to see what its idling at. Does this just sound like simple adjustments or something else?
Oh, and while backing the trailer into the water, i forgot to lift the motor all the way and when backwards and scraped the steg. It was a slow backwards, but it was enough to hold the truck and trailer from rolling back. I'm afraid i might have damaged something even though its running fine ahaha, is there anything i could have damaged and not known about down there? The steg looks ok, just a little scrap, no new chunks, and just some scratches on the rest of the bottom, no holes or leaking fluids. Prop is ok too.
