Which one of these names is still in business? I have had two Johnson Engines a 1970 something Johnson 90 that used to have a carb per cylinder that drank gas but was fast as hell but heavy... and a 1982 Johnson 50 I currently use. - I would love to put a bigger motor on the Whaler - anyone know the max engine size a 1965 17 foot Boston Whaler can accept? Thanks in advance - Paul:D

If you are talking about a new engine, Evinrude is what is available'
You boat should have a plate on it that lists the max horsepower allowed for your boat.

With out all the numbers, Im guess you have a 20"+ transom height, a 17' boat and a 5.5' wide transom with a steering wheel.
That (if correct) comes out to 100 HP.

100HP is the max HP for that hull, which is officially a 16', not a 17'. Transom is 20".

It changed from a 16 to a 17 in 1973 when they introduced the smirked hull for the Montauk model. Your 1965 BW is not a Montauk. The correct model depends on the original interior configuration.

Many BW 16s that have been modified with an aftermarket fiberglass center console and seat are usually called "Madetauk".

On my BW 16s and 17s I have always gotten the best all-round satisfaction from 70s. . .JohnnyRude 70s or Suzuki DF70. The V4 100s made them sluggish handling.

In a new engine I would go for an Evinrude ETEC 70 or 90.

Bombardier (Canadian company) is the current owner of the old OMC brands. They retired the Johnson nameplate a couple of years ago when they got out of the 4 stroke business, so the only brand name left from the old OMC group is Evinrude. They still provide parts support for many of the old OMC products.

i agree with JB, also a boat prior to 1972 was not required to have the HP/ capacity plate, so don't look for it.
