Re: Johnson-Evinrude
FICHT (and e-TEC) motors use a high pressure fuel pump to force gasoline only, into the combustion chamber of each cylinder, after all ports are closed on the piston upstroke. Air and 2 cycle Direct Injection oil still traverse the crankcase in the traditional fashion of ordinary two cycle motors , although the oil delivery systems is more sophisticated, and use less oil. The effect is that only air and some oil are required to sweep out combustion gasses from the previous power stroke. Since the gasoline is injected after the ports are closed, raw gasoline (and it's nasty hydrocarbon pollutants) is burned more completely, and not discharged into the exhaust.
The net effect is a much lower level of pollutants from the motor, which rivals a 4 cycle motor's pollutants
