I figured I'd bring this back to the pros here. Since you guys did help me alot with getting my motor running, I thought I'd search for your help once more. I decided to check the lower end after having so many problems trying to get it running, figuring that maybe the guy that sold me the motor rigged the rest of it and sure enough I was right. The lower end was sealed in clear silicone. Everything! All the o-rings, seals, you name it. The lower end had water in the oil, but it wasn't milky just yet. I purchased a new seal kit and ran into a problem. The prop shaft seal from the kit is way smaller than where it should go. Thinking I bought the wrong one I returned it and bought a different seal kit. Still the same problem. Could this piece have been changed from another motor and installed into the lower end? Is there something I did wrong in removing the original seal? Thanks

There was a change in the seal size. As far as I can remember, the part that it goes in is the same, with different bore for the seal. Again, as I remember it, the change was to avoid having such a thin band of aluminum around the seal. I'll try to figure out what year the change was made, if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

EDIT: Ok, the correct seal for your FD-11 (1957) is part number 302495. There is no Sierra number listed for it. 302495 is still available from Johnson/Evinrude dealers for a whopping $35.

I don't know what the 1958 took, but by 1959 the seal was changed to 302545, replaced by 313284 (Sierra 18-2005). I suspect that is what you've been buying and why it won't fit.

EDIT EDIT: I can make the seal that you have fit the bearing head that you have. Send me a PM if interested.

The Seal kit I have is the 18-2684 but as far as original part #'s I have no clue.

I had the wife take the lower unit in. The response I received was, "The seal is correct but housing is bad, needs part #383757 which has internal seal that is permanent and doesn't disassemble to point that yours is torn down." Grr! Always something to keep me from getting on the water.

I don't know about that one! I think someone may be mistaken. The only reason the housing would be bad that I can think of would be a bad drive shaft bronze bushing, unless you can see something's obviously broken. Check with F-R on that! I know my FD-11K used a different seal than the one that was for my other FD-11 on the prop shaft---it was too small just like yours. I had to get the later seal like F-R said. It was readily available. I might have got mine at vintage outboards, but can't remember.
Also, I can't remember any "internal SEALS that are permanent and can't be replaced" in an FD-11. That's why I like them so much---you can fix what's bad on them relatively easy.
Don't give up!
