Re: Johnson hydro-electric

The leg is shifted electrically. There are 2 solenoids in the lower unit gear box. They require power in proper intervals to get reverse and neutral. Should be 3 wires coming up from the mid section. If you can find them we can guide you through the diagnostics. There is problem areas from the shift selector right down to the hydraulics. Proper diagnostics is recommended, as it can throw you for a loop. It even requires a specific gear oil (type "c")
Do you have a manual?

Re: Johnson hydro-electric

A hydro-electric shift will have 2 wires from the lower unit. A blue and a green. The motor should be a 3 cylinder model either 1970 or 71. The model number will tell.

A hydro-electric lower shifts on oil pressure. It is a "fail safe" type that stays in forward unless the solenoids open passages to divert the oil to push back on the clutch dog for neutral and reverse.

Power to one wire (green I think) is neutral. Power to both wires is reverse. The motor has to be running (turning the oil pump) to shift and you must have the correct oil in the gearcase.

Good luck!
