I have a Johnson Javaline that was my grand fathers. It's a complete engine with its covers tank and lines and I would like to use it. What steps should I take first to do this?

Re: Johnson Javelin

Do you have the '56 or '57?

Regardless, step 1 is to always check compression before spending too much money. How long has it been sitting?

Hi Derico84. Welcome to iboats. Great old motor you've got there. The Javelin models were the top of the line in their day with all the bling, bells and whistles available at that time, but it is still essentially an OMC (Jonhson/Evinrude) "Big Twin", 2-stroke outboard. Here's a great article to read in order to familiarize yourself with your new toy. Assuming the compression is ok (above 100psi per cylinder) all the rest can be fixed pretty easily and you can get most of the parts right here at iboats. If you look on the transom clamp there should be a small riveted metal tag with a model and serial number on it. If you can post that, we'll be able to pin down the exact year.
