Johnson lower unit combatabilty que.

I have a 05 johnson 50. The lower unit is gone, do not have one. It appears I need to find between a 89 -2005 40, 48, or 50 lower unit to replace this. I called a johnson dealer and he though that an older 90 hp would fit but that the gear ratio would be different but that we could probably even things up with the prop pitch. Does any one agree with this, heard or this, is this a bad idea? I just have no experience with this, if this is just jury rig fix I would like to know thank you.

stick with the right ones, the 90 lower is designed to be push by a 4 cylinder, i can't believe it would fit anyway.

also what cause your lower to crap out, i have a 2004 50 would like to know for maintainance.

If memory serves TD he bought the boat and motor but the lower was already gone.

Look on Ebay now that you know what you need, may take a while but I got one for my '81 50 for $140 with a prop and have been using it for a couple years now.

You probably won't find a deal quite that good, I think I had a little devine intervention, but they are there if you look long enough.

there are several on ebay that MIGHT work, also you need to consider if you need long or short shaft. ebay# 130289964398, 180331870036,

The guy who owned it before ran the lower unit into a submerged log. He said it was broken up pretty bad. The person at the shop apparently thought the same and just threw the unit in the garbage. I need the short shaft, I believe. It's on the back of a 17 ft all welded john boat. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help everyone, found a rebuilt 94 on ebay for $500, really appreciate the help.
