I have a 1982 johnson 90hp that I drained the lower unit oil and replaced the water pump. I just need to make sure of how to put it back in. Any help with the procedure would be great. And what kind of oil should I use.

Re: johnson lower unit oil replacement

that should help, thank you for the website. the only part that does not make sense to me is the fact that they say to re-fill it from the bottom hole. gravity tells me that this is going to be difficult unless i use a tube or something so the bottle isnt in an upright position. any thoughts on this???

The bottle fits & seals onto the hole. The bottle will be squeezeable. It'll be pretty obvious when you have the bottle.

Alan,

You fill it from the bottom to prevent any air pockets. Not sure from your post if you are trying to reuse old oil. For the cost, I'd just use new.

You have two options when replacing the oil 1) Purchase the oil in a tube with a tapered end that inserts into the lower plug hole (works, but can be messy if the tube slips) or... 2) Spend a couple of extra bucks and purchase the pump attachment that screws onto a jug of oil. The pump has a short length of hose that has a fitting you screw into the lower plug hole. Very convenient and much less messy.

Good luck!

Brew

Re: johnson lower unit oil replacement

that helps me a bit more. i am defintely using new oil. i just am having a hard time understanding how the oil will fill up the lower unit while i am squeezing a bottle that is right side up. the bottle with the tip is inserted into the hole and you are squeezing but if you need more presssure you have to plug the hole and then re-insert the tip and try and get all of the oil out of the bottle. i think i am making it sound more difficult than it is.
