Thanks for reply G Dane. I can only see two bolts holding lower unit on. Is this correct? There is one tiny hole (looks like a set-screw hole) in top of prop-shaft housing. Should there be something in that hole? Could the water leak be there? Please advise.
Bmeister

Hi again Bassmeister.

When you reply, please continue in same topic, its easyer to read all information, then. On your 1976 85HP Johnson, i believe there are 4 or 6 bolts, below the cavitation plates, and one under the steering correction finn, holding the unit on. Before you remove them, you have to disengage the shifting rod, which is under the motor hood, in the front-middle of the motor, below the carbs. I assume your motor is the 3 cylinder model. The holes you mention - are they the two holes behind the propeller ? They are for pulling the end from the gearcase, as far as i know. I would recommend you to get a manual before you start. You could easily ruin something, worth much more than a manuals price. Replacing seals is a bit difficult, and as i remember it requires a special tool to disassembly this gearcase, i never worked on this model.

Hi Bassmiester;
I belive that 85HP is a 4 cylender model. There should be 6 9/16 bolts (3 on each side) that is visible, remove the trim tab and you will find an additional under there then directly ahead of that one is one more. Before the finanl bolt is removed, remove the shift linkage bolt under the bottom carb.
