On your 1976 85HP Johnson, i believe there are 4 or 6 bolts, below the cavitation plates, and one under the steering correction finn, holding the unit on. Before you remove them, you have to disengage the shifting rod, which is under the motor hood, in the front-middle of the motor, below the carbs. I assume your motor is the 3 cylinder model. The holes you mention - are they the two holes behind the propeller ? They are for pulling the end from the gearcase, as far as i know. I would recommend you to get a manual before you start. You could easily ruin something, worth much more than a manuals price. Replacing seals is a bit difficult, and as i remember it requires a special tool to disassembly this gearcase, i never worked on this model.
