Johnson Lower Units

I am looking at a Wellcraft Coastal that has late 90s Johnson 150 Ocean Runners on it. They have 450 hours on them. From the little bit of research I have done, I have read these are no nonsense motors that are easy to maintain. It is my understanding they are not the most fuel efficient outboards out there, but I'll take that over a motor that is prone to problems. Before I make the 2 hour drive, does anyone know why the lower units look like this (see pic)? Is this just from them being 2 strokes or is there a bigger issue? They look fouled up like the back of a diesel. Thanks.

Those motors are indeed 2 cycle, run very well and suck fuel like crazy. However, the lower units are not usual looking for anything fuel related. I would guess he left them in the water and they have marine growth on them,

Combination of marine growth, two-stroke oil, grime, particularly if they did a lot of trolling.
