i,m new to outboard engines and bought an old boat & motor to restore i originally got it started but it backfired and quit. I have checked compression all 4 between 145 & 150 i rebuilt carbs checked all coils for fire @ about 7/16 on a spark tester all good and if im correct my timing according to the joe reeves method is set correctly @ 20dg with plugs out @wot.the nut on the flywheel was loose but i tightened it before checking the timing.i cant even get the motor to cough now, any suggestions as to what might be wrong would be greatly appreciated before the rest of my hair falls out. lol

Did you replace the flywheel key and torque to 100-105 Foot Pounds? - The key is what locks the flywheel in place for correct timing.

The motor has to turn at 300 RPM to start, that takes a powerful, fully charged battery. You also need to check that the chokes are 100% closed and stay 100% closed while cranking for a cold start.

When you set the timing, remember that Mr Reeves said minus 4 degrees for static timing. Edit: the 115HP full throttle spark advance running was listed as 24 degrees by OMC Service Bulletin #2004 issued in July, 1980.
