99.5% chance the shock absorber (slip clutch) in your lower unit is broken. It's below the water pump

how can I get to the spring to check it. Can you just remove the lower unit?

A much easier check would be to remove the cylinder head, and check for rust. I don't know why a broken clutch spring would make it pull over hard.

Re: Johnson Model CD-20R?

Actually, the shock absorber was a troublesome part and even more so now that they are old and the metal is getting fatigued. As the diagram shows, when the spring breaks, the broken ends ramp up on each other and force the upper and lower sections apart. That makes the whole assembly too long to fit in the space that it goes in. It usually results in being hard to turn at first and then if you keep dogging it, it will burn or break the bearing plate just below the water pump.

To see it you have to remove the lower unit and water pump, and the bearing plate under the pump. If it frees up as soon as you take it apart, you found the trouble. P.S. you have to remove the powerhead before you can get the lower unit off. As soon as you get the powerhead off, you will know which is bound up--the powerhead or lower unit.

Found one of my problems. Top Cylinder fires, but bottom cylinder does not fire. Checked spark plug and it is not the problem. What do I do next?

The non firing plug is a coil issue 99.9% of the time (as in replace it as when they are old they do not work) but it does not explain why it is hard to turn over. They should be unrelated issues.

No spark is likely caused by bad coils as samo suggests. If they are original they are bad - no question about it.

FR is probably right about the shock absorber causing your hard pulling problem. It is very common in the old 5.5 and 7.5 hp motors. Separate the powerhead from the lower unit and try to pull it over. If its still hard to pull then you have a powerhead issue. If its not hard to pull then its the lower unit. Do this before pulling the head.
