Johnson Model FD-11

Picked this nice Johnson FD-11 18 HP Seahorse up at a yard sale. Cleaned the fuel system and seemed to run fine. Impeller looked good, nice and flexible, but just stated it up again submerged in test barrel and it took a short while (after warm up) for the water to spray out of the exit port, then had fair amount of water spray then the water stopped exiting the port then after a short while i heard a "hisss" and the engine shut down?.
Anyone here a have an opinion as to the cause?. Does this outboard have a faulty thermostat or does it have a thermostat issue if it does contain one?.

nice find!!! but as a rule, unless the seller can provide you with a receipt showing that the impeller was recently replaced, it needs to be replaced.

Ok lets assume that the impeller is ok, what else would cause the engine to over heat with a hiss and shut down? Maybe water pick up tube not correctly installed?. Do this particular model have thermo stat that maybe sticking?

i dont think that motor has a t-stat, and yes if the water tube grommet is folded over or out of place it will restrict water flow.

Ok will inspect the water tube seating properly and that rubber grommet insert. I did fail to mention in first post that when i pulled the lower unit did notice that tube prommet in the pump housing bent over and tried to straighten it out as best as i could. By the way seen no water in around spark plugs or any indication of water in the cylinders from maybe a faulty head gasket. Started motor up a minute ago this time water spray normal right after startup up then water spray from spray port stopped so i shut it down before the over heating began.

Any place i can get a replacement grommet and impeller for my FD-11, maybe provide a link.
