Hi : Maybe you can help. Their is no model plate on my engine. It is a Johnson 5.5 HP Sea Horse with the square cover vs the rounder cover with the two rear wings.I know that up to 58/59? these motors, from the pictures I've seen, have a round cover with no wings at the rear.. I saw a picture of what mine looks like but it was painted all gray and was a 63. So I suspect that it is somewhere between 59-64? The number on the disc punch-out is 185824(?); last # - I can't read. I also have other numbers from around the engine but no 'CD" numbers. Can you help ? Is the model # stamped anywhere else on these engines besides on the missing plate? Sorry to bother you with this; Many thanks in advance, Ed Doyle, FL

Might be a welsh plug on the powerhead that has some numbers. Looks like a small freeze plug. Have you looked at the motors on this site? Might be able to narrow it down further:

Welcome to Iboats, Ed.

Thanks for such a detailed post. I have little information on the serial numbers from that era, except to say that 185.... should be from the very early 60s. Probably '59-'61, somewhere in there.

The fiberglass hood came in in '59. A picture would certainly allow us to identify the year. The attachment thing doesn't work so try hosing your picture at another site and post a link here. Or if it's not working out email them to me at paul.moir@gmail.com

Good places to host your pics are:

tinypic.com
xs.to
photobucket.com

The first one doesn't require registration.

Does you motor have enough of the original paint and decals to identify it? There are copies of the original sales brochurs for most years on line at old-omc.de/
