Re-installing the tiller handle. I took it apart and cleaned it. It was pretty nasty, caked with grease etc. Anyway, when re-installing, do you line up the first tooth of the gear on the handle with the first slot in the rack? Also the plastic screw in the rack has the flared head snapped off. It doesn't look like it is a problem it's been working for years like this but they are only $7 on this site. Should I replace it?

they are a bit of a pain to lineup but yes tooth 1 to tooth 1 should do but trial and error it

make certain you end up with full throttle range without the tooth slipping out of gear

may as well replace the screw cana metal one be fitted in ??

maybe you can find a 50 Cent equivalent at the hardware store

while in there check the rack for…. tooth wear causing slip outs

Isn't the screw for the idle speed (to set trolling speed)? Do you care? Many people never even knew what it was for, much less actually used it.

very interesting if it is ?? … some early 9.5hp had no external wheel to adjust the idle and never saw anything about it in Leroy's write up I i'll have to read him up again

thanks for info :)

update : see Leroy's note and I do have such an earlier 9.5 with the adjustment above the top sparkplug ... basically a cam that gets pushed against the mag plate to keep it from going down to slow...

Idle Stop Adjustment :
The 64 - late 66 has an plastic adjuster (Idle stop setting) just rearward of the flywheel (spark plug side) that adjusts the armature plate stop. It has a thumb screw on it for easy adjustment, but you need to pull the cowling off to access it.

Thanks for the info and the screw has backwards threads and a hole thru the entire length that the idle control knob has a shaft running thru it to move the idle slower or faster. Pic attached.
