I bought a motor stand and a motor came with it for $50.00.
The lower unit is painted OD Green and there are no serial numbers or mfg names on this. I am pretty sure it's a Johnson motor but I have no idea what HP or year. Please let me know if you own one of these.
Currently when I pull the start cord it will not engage. The cord retracts and is OK but the top wont engage with the head. I guess the big spring should pop it down? If you have fixed one of these, please let me know.
I'll buy the manual as soon as I determine what the model.
Thanks, WishboneGov motor 3.JPGresz.jpg

Look for a core plug on the engine block. It will have the serial number of the outboard, and, if you're lucky, the model number. Some do and some don't.

Also, could you take a photo of the rear of the engine? It's all in the shade, so it's impossible to tell what it looks like. Also, it appears that you have the recoil starter off in these photos.

The better the photos, the better able we'll be to help identify this.

From the shape of the cowling, it looks like an early 70s OMC outboard. I doubt that it's a military model.

Core plug info would be really helpful. Looks like an OMC though.

Re: Johnson mystery gov motor

Its probably a 1969 or 1970 Johnson 33hp. The flywheel without a ring gear means that it is manual start. The recoil starter mechanism is supposed to engage the small, toothed "wheel" on top of the flywheel. If it isn't there may be a part missing in it. Go to the following site, select the tab that says "Parts," select "Johnson" in the small window, then find your motor by year, horsepower and model number (1969 33R69A will work), then go to Rewind Starter Group. You can look at the parts explosion there to see if this seems to be something missing.

Also, look on the front of the motor. under the cowl and behind the steering yoke for a data plate - if you see a model number such a "33R69" that would indicate the year and hp rating that I mentioned.

PS: The paint color is not military - it was stock for that time frame.

Re: Johnson mystery gov motor

Thank you gentlemen, for the wonderful information on the mystery motor. I will check the core plug ASAP and get back to you. I will include JPEG?s of the pull start system. The wheel with teeth is present on top of the flywheel and the mechanism to grab those teeth seems to be present on the pull start assemble. I have some High hopes for this motor but must get the pull start working.
I will also include JPEG?s of the rear of the motor.
Thanks again,

I checked the core plug this morning and at the top is a large M-
then: J34-J851
some of the characters are worn but I believe this is accurate.
Thanks,

Re: Johnson mystery gov motor

The number on that core plug is J3 with a scratch then J851 (I can't make any sense of it on any site.
From the other number on the block it would seem to be a 71 Johnson. I don't know the HP.
I figured out the missing parts on the pull-start and that will make all the differnece. There is also a JPEG of the rear view.
Thanks for any input

All three pawl springs are missing on the recoil starter.
