Recently purchased a Johnson 20hp? 25hp? 1996? Long shaft outboard. There is no serial number plate. The stamped serial on the clamp bracket is unreadable.
The number on the engine Welch plug is G3572880.
Carburettor number is JS 432700.
That’s all I have to go on.

I think your motor was made in Calhoun, GA (the "G" in the serial number). I have been looking and asking for a serial number list for the GA motors for some time now. If anybody has such a list, how about sharing it?

looks like a lot of extra paint has been applied over the life of your motor. That can be a good thing preventing corrosion or bad thing covering it up. You say the stamped serial on the clamp bracket is unreadable. Have you tried a bit of paint stripper? wont hurt as long as you rinse off with water.
pick up a small tin can at auto parts store. Helped me find the serial number on my 1956 Aerocraft aluminum Vhull
