I am planning to go look at a boat today that has a 225hp OceanPro outboard (2000 yr). I know enough about outboards to know that there are good ones and really bad ones. I was hoping you guys could help me out with a few questions;
Overall are these good engines?
What are the typical issues I should look for?
What is the typical compression test pressures and spreads?
These arent the Ficht motors are they?
Thanks!!!!

some ocean Pros were FICHT motors in the the late 90's and early 2000's

if it has carbs, then its not ficht...but it would probably say Ficht on it...they were proud if it back then!

compression should be over 100 and within 10 lbs of each other....150 in each cylinder would be fantastic...

i have some V4's.... and my manual covers the v6's up to 175 hp....so i am not sure of the simmilarities of the higher HP motors

The average compression on those mtrs was 80-90 psi and no more than 15 psi difference between cyls.

Since this is a Johnson, it will have carbs, and is not a Ficht. These are great motors, and the 2000 year has all the "fixes".
If it has good compression (100 psi - 90 psi), LU is good (no water), trim and tilt works well, I would not hesitate to buy it (price being right, of course.)

Re: Johnson OceanPro opinions

Thanks for the info guys. I could only fit my guage in the upeer 4 cylinders and got 85-90-90-90. I noticed that there was some rust around the head gasket on one of the lower cylinders. I guessing this is just a leaking gasket? It also took a long time to get started when it was cold. Not sure if thats indicative of a fuel or compression problem. Once it warmed up and blew out a lot of white smoke it seemed to run strong. I thought oil smoke was blue? Water leak somewhere? Going to take a second look at it today.
