My '63 Johnson 10 horse doesn't have a locking mechanism either. Friction keeps it up, it's a pain in the butt.

Thanks Fishy55, I thought that through the years someone may have taken it off. I believe I know how to make something that will work.

Scrap Oak flooring work for me to keep the motor up when launching. I use a strap on the kicker when it's not being used.

I think the old evinrudes had a quarter in. spring steel rod down on the motor mount. Should work on the Johnson.

Hello Tommy,
My old 1958 Johnson 7.5 has a nut and bolt directly below and behind the transom clamp on the right side of the motor when you are standing behind the motor. I read somewhere that if you tighten that nut slightly it will create a little friction and then when you tilt your motor up at the ramp, it will stay up so that you don't strike the prop or skeg when loading or unloading. I had the same issue with my motor and tightened that nut a bit. Now it stays up when I tilt it up and yet it is not so tight that I can't easily tilt it back down again. Take a look and see if you have a similar set up. I have no idea if that motor does but it's worth a look.
Sean.

My 1965 18hp Evinrude doesn't have a latch either. There is a spring and bolt tensioner that need to be adjusted to the desired tension to hold the motor up and still allow it to pivot.
