I am about to remove to rebuild a damaged (propeller shaft sheared) lower unit from my 1992 Johnson 150 HP outboard. Is there any special steps to take in removing the lower unit such as sequence of unbolting, shift location before unbolting etc?

First you need to remove the bolt under the carb the connects the shift linkage with the shift rod. That rod moves up and down to shift the lower unit in gear. Put the motor in reverse and then remove the bolt from the rod and linkage. You will need a universal socket adapter with 3/8 socket to remove the bolt from the linkage. Then remove the lower unit bolts and it should drop right out. Do not try and remove that lower unit with out disconnecting the lickage from the shift rod first.
I have a 1986 150 Johnson and just went threw all this to replace a water pump.

The first step is to get the OMC shop manual. It covers all that stuff and will give you the procedures for what to do next.

I don't think you have a bolt on the shift linkage, just a clip to pull, and linkage to slide.None the less,to replace the shaft, you'll need the book.If someone else is replacing the shaft, you only save 30 minutes or so of labor by dropping the lower unit yourself.

DHP

Thanks haybarn,SoLittle and DHP for the responses. Is it a good thing to mark the shift rod location? I know on my 140 hp which I removed the lower unit, the rod was adjustable (it would rotate cw or ccw) and it's important to keep it right where it was when removed?
