Hi, I've got a 1998 25hp J25TELECB. My starter quit so I opened it up to clean up the commutator and found that the brushes have worn out. My first thought was to buy new brushes fro ishopmarine.com ($20), but if I could find another working starter at a junk yard for a good price, I might just do that.

Anyway, my question: Is there a source online to check other Johnson motors (different years and models) to see if their parts will work on my '98? My starter is part #0586278.

Thanks, ryan

buying a used starter is a gamble...I would just rebuild your old one....A used starter will be more than 20 bucks...if the commutator is not all pitted and scored its a easy rebuild....

wash the old starter out with electronic cleaner to get all the carbon out...lightly sand the commutator with 1000 grit paper to break the glaze...spray it clean..install new brushes...go boating
