I just picked up a 59 Johnson QD-20. Cleaned the carbs and put a fuel pump on it (so I could use the gas tank I have) and it was running decently. I took it to the lake fired it up and jumped in not realizing that when I jumped in the boat the prop went into the gravel. As soon as I put it in gear everything died. The pull start would not turn the flywheel. It was jammed on something.

I took it home and removed the starter where I turned the flywheel by hand. It was hard to turn but would turn. I then put the starter back on and the starter would turn the flywheel but it is now very hard to pull and is no longer a smooth pull.

I am am looking for suggestions on what could be bound up. It seems to be something on the drive shaft. I took the flywheel off and could not find any interference. Compression is good in both cylinders.

I tried to take the lower unit off today but it would not come apart from the shifting lever. Is this normal? How does that drive shaft slide out of the motor mount?

I have gotten it to start for about 2 seconds twice since the incident but it instantly dies.

Did you remove the cover on the side of the exhaust housing ?-----That is where you REMOVE one screw in the coupling to disconnect the shift rod.

The way I read this is that you are aware that something is significantly wrong, but you continue to try to start and run it anyway.
Seems like a bad approach to me. :)

You are on the right diagnostic path to take off the LU, but do not change direction just because you are having trouble.

I had it running in a barrel, I had never had it on the water. It would start second pull most of the time in a barrel. I took the flywheel off after the incident and it looks like the coils are new from the last owner and did not look like they had been damaged from the incident. The flywheel and drive shaft did not seem damaged on the top side.

Remove the lower unit and see if the motor pulls over OK. If it does, the problem is with the lower unit.

So I need more help. Motor does not have a cover plate to remove the shifting linkage. Leads me to think that this is a different motor than the model number tag or has a different shaft on it. Someone had painted it so I thought maybe the cover was hiding under the paint. I scrapped it off for the area I though the cover should be at but there was nothing there.

Anyone know how to remove the lower without the side cover plate.

Powerhead has to come off.-----This is not a QD 20 motor.----It is a 5.5 / 7.5 HP model.-----Or perhaps a mixture of parts.
