I just rescued a 7.5 hp Johnson Seahorse from a trash pile. Model J8RCIC, Serial # E5394861. Year would be very helpful. Quality of engine, personal experiences, worthy of dollars being spent on it. I've got an old 1950's Blue Star 12' aluminum that it might work well on. Thoughts anyone??? Thanks for your time.

1981 model.----A very good motor when it left the factory.nearly 40 years ago.-----Evaluate the condition before spending any coins.----It needs a new water pump impeller before your first fishing trip.

I would remove the lower unit, then test compression. Next, test for spark with an adjustable tester, open-air type. Both tests done with the plugs removed. The tester is cheap, and the same auto parts store selling the spark tester might loan out or rent out a compression tester (screw-in style, with a release button). Biggest decision point is low compression in one or both. Next, ignition parts costs if weak or no spark -- but worth it, in my view, if the compression checks out. You can check the impeller with the l.u. off, but no sense in cranking it on the engine if the impeller is old and cracked -- possibility of getting bits and pieces in the cooling passages somewhere.
