I like to tinker with some of these older motors and I am thrilled to find this forum...I picked up a 1969 Boston Whaler in pretty good shape and the motor is a Johnson Seahorse 18 according to the engine cover. It has sat since 2009, I got her to run with a little throttle, won't idle quite right and seems doggy, as expected...gonna need a carb kit so ID is of this motor is crucial to me.

This is my first five minutes here, if I'm in the wrong area I can straighten up with a push in the right direction!

Serial # J2480734

She is a 1964. Great motor, pound for pound on of the best in my humble opinion.

thanks a million...how can you get 1964 off that #?

My wife calls it a sickness.....I call it my hobby :)

The Johnson model numbers are actually quite easy, Evinrudes get a little harder to memorize.

Oh yeah, there is also the Outboard Year ID Charts, check out the FAQS

My dad said when I pulled that old Boston Whaler home with that motor on it for $200 that I was like my uncle Denny...eat garbage and sh*t gold! Now the fun really begins...starting with the carb do have experience with the Sierra Kits and/or Mallory?

I started a new thread with that question but figured I would come back to the source!
