Can I adjust (turn) the shift rod on a 1985 Johnson 90hp without dropping the gearcase? Thanks.

Re: johnson shift rod

On my 85 120 evinrude, no. Well, maybe if the powerhead and all the upper covers/cowls came off first. It's eccentric/bent where it comes through to the linkage. I'm guessing you need an impeller/water pump kit if you're asking about the linkage/gearcase. Mine got messed up when I did my water pump, had to drop the lower unit 3 times to reset it. What's the big deal???

Re: johnson shift rod

This is my uncle's motor and he wants to get a trip out next week before we do the impeller. The thing grinds into reverse and I was hoping to do a quick adjustment before the clutch dog is trashed (guess not). I'll be replacing the primer solenoid on Sat. and was only curious if I could solve the shift problem at the same time. He bought this thing last summer and I suspect the previous owner messed up the setting when doing the pump.I was hoping to avoid the water pump till next month should bolts break off etc. Thanks Luna

You gotta drop the l/u to do the job. Follow the measurements in the book. It'll only take you 15 mins to do the job right. Chief ;)

Re: johnson shift rod

Changed the water pump without incident yesterday and re-adjusted the shift rod. We had a little binding with the rod but after taking the gearcase down and reinstalling everything works GREAT! I also replaced the bypass solenoid and the motor now runs like a top. Thanks for the motivation and advice. I was surprised that the rod required three full turns to get the measurement called for in the book. Also the old water pump was missing an o ring under the impeller.
