I have a 88 johnson 90HP. The gear on the starter just spins, sometimes it will engage the flywheel but when it does it hardly makes it turn. It ran last week, then I took it out on the water yesterday and it started then it just quit and the the starter just started spinning. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Brian

Also, make sure your battery is fully charged and if it is, get it load tested (free at most car parts stores). A fully charged battery should measure 12.65 volts or more.

Yep, battery condition and you need good and clean cables and connections to start with.

Re: Johnson Starter problem

And it never hurts when you have starter problems to open it up and dump all the black junk outta there and clean it up. And put a VERY thin layer of grease on the gear shaft and bendix.
