I have a Johnson Super-Sea Horse 40 Electramatic RKL 28B Serial Number J2686213. I'm guessing its in the 60's. It's in good shape. It's sitting on the back of a 1958 Duracraft Duralite Supreme all aluminum 16ft boat. I'm fixing it up for my Dad, who has cancer. I'm going to take him for a ride in his boat and cherish the process to get him there with all my heart.

I'm here to ask, what battery do I need? I have read that at least the early 60 models may not be charging underway. I may need to consider solar, specialized batteries, or something. Bear in mind that I would be satisfied to get it started and make test run but the long game is to take it to the GA rivers down into the coast on solo overnight tours.

And if anyone knows what year this motor is and where I could buy more parts for it, would be appreciated too. I want to have everything in hand for the moment my small engine tinkering neighbor drifts across the street and takes interest. :)

It is a 1968 model.------It left the factory with a 10 amp belt driven generator.------It needs that as gearshift draws about 1.5 amps when underway.-----A fine motor if you have the knowledge to do simple maintenance.-----It will need a new water pump impeller before launching.----Your location.------evinrudeparts.ca------is one place for parts.------this site and others have parts too.

Thank you so much!!! I would love to do the simple maintenance and if not I, someone! But I think it is safer for long trips if I know what I am doing with it.

So do you have a battery recommendation? Any marine battery would work?

My list says that is a 1966 motor. Not much different than a 1968 anyway. Yeah, a group 24-size marine battery will be fine.

I ordered a 66 parts catalog and a 68 owners manual for it off of ebay because I couldn't narrow it down. Was hoping that they would be similar enough to be useful. Thank you for the info. 24 size marine battery it is.

RD models are manual shift, RK models are electric shift. So, obviously, anything related to the shift in any way differ between the two.

Take the lower unit off.----Inspect water pump impeller and housing.-----Post the compression test numbers.---Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or better on both leads.-----Do a complete evaluation of this motor before spending any beer tokens.----

Use Johnson/Evinrude premium blend gear lube for your electric shift system.

You can put that ultra pro gear in there.-----But is is electric shift and a TYPE-C gear for electric shift is to be used.----Now marketed as " PREMIUM BLEND " by BRP-----Time to talk to your local shop as the internet will sell you what you ordered ----Right or wrong.
