Johnson "SystemCheck(r)" fried??

So I pulled the big bad boat out of storage to get it ready for spring time....and the battery was dead, so I set the charger on it (40amp) and while it was charging I decided to listen to the radio while I was working, so I turned the key on and then turned the radio on.

When I did that, I got my normal "beep" and everything worked correctly.

after a while I decided to see if the battery was charged and hit the starter.....with the charger still hooked up.

So she hits about twice and then nothing.....and I mean nothing, no power at all.

So after searching for an hour and a half I found the fuseable link under the motor cover. It was poped so I replaced it, and hit the key again, and could hear the pop of that fuse going.....

So long story short, the SystemCheck tach/idiot light gauge is to blame....unhooked it and got the motor started and all the antifreeze flushed out, motor runs fine and all my other gauges work....its just that one gauge that is causing the problem.

So did I kill it? Is there any way to test it? ..... anyone got a wiring diagram? It was hard as hell to chase wires without one....

I really doubt the system check system had anything to do with the issue. Mainly because the wiring to and from that gauge is of much smaller current handling capability than the fuse-link. If the gauge had been the problem, the gauge itself would have went up in smoke and the fuse-link would not have opened. You have a far more serious wiring issue somewhere.

Makes sense....but why would unplugging the gauge open the short?

Ohhh another thing....I connecting 2 wires to the gauge 12v+ to the purple and ground to the black.....these were the only 2 wires hooked up to it and it cause a short.

I opened the gauge and cant see any burned circuits.....I think I will try and remove the tach coil and see if the lights and such work.

EDIT: Fusible link is only 20amps....a dead short anywhere will kill that...

EDIT EDIT: Just found a diode that is burned and cracked.....but its between the + and - ??? some kinda rectifier??

Ok just so everyone knows....the diode was my problem.

I replaced the diode between the power and ground and now everything work like a charm.

If you have the guts to tear into it a .05 cent diode can save you $178.95
