Looking at a friend's T&T on a 1997 Johnson 90hp, 2-stroke. Problem was that it will go down, but will not go up. When I got there first thing, I hit the up button and it went up, then after that one time it would'nt go up again. I took the relays off and switched them.....both of them will let the motor go down. Reversed the wires on the switch....both positions will let it go down. I took each connection off in the relay box and cleaned them.....still will not go up. For reference....when you hit the up button...nothing happens. No clicking from the relay, no motor running.....nothing. But when you hit down it works fine. Anyone have have any suggestions on what to do next? Thanks for any help.

Re: Johnson T&T Help

this is a wild stab... I bought a motor that wasnt hooked up.... to check the TNT the guy took the two wires (one blue and one green) that went to the trim motor and touched each to the battery..the motor went up...he switched the wires and the motor went down....

sooo

I would think if you could unplug the wires from your cowl switch( there is a connector inside the cowl probably) and you took leads to a battery you might be able to try the same trick...basically just to see if the motor and or PUMP is working...

this is a laymans test.....use at your own risk!! ha ha ha

have you verified the fluid lever is correct??

whats the model number???

Re: Johnson T&T Help

Sounds like you got a bad t/t switch or a loose wire some where.

Re: Johnson T&T Help

Thanks guys, I am taking a battery over there tomorrow and doing the test with that to see IF it will work without a switch and at least go up. The switch on the control lever isnt working at all, but thats another issue, I at least want the motor to go up and down first. I will post the serial number tomorrow as well as anymore info if I have any. I'm kind of leaning toward a loose connection somewhere also being that it work for a split second.

It sounds like its going to run if powered directly with 12v ,
unplug the main harness cannon plug and spray elec cleaner on the contact probes, if that doesn't fix it theres a problem in the switch itself.

Re: Johnson T&T Help

SOLVED.......putting the green and blue wire on the pos and neg of the battery did nothing, I checked and cleaned all the connections, unplugged and tested everything and could not trace the problem. Motor would go down all day long, just not go up. Got to looking at the relays, and noticed on the green side (down), there is a green wire that went from the relay to the block in the middle.....not on the blue side (up). Those wires run all the way to the front of the motor, to a sensor of some type thats right under the steering arm behind the tilt tube then back out to the relay. I simply unplugged the blue wires going to the sensor and plugged them into themselves and there it went.....runs like a champ. The sensor isnt the tilt indicator.....it's something else. I havent seen it on any other brands. Anyone have an idea what it is? Either way the motor will go up and down and can be used. Oh, and the console switch was just a burned wire.

Re: Johnson T&T Help

It's a tilt limit switch adjustment, which is used to prevent the max tilt of the motor. Some motors will hit the splashwell if tilted to the maximum.

Gotcha....well it's a long way from that. The part is like $40 but if he says he's fine with it, then I guess I will let it be. At least it works. The guy was thinking this issue was going to cost hundreds......not 2 seconds to disconnect some wires.
