I have a 1987 Johnson 110hp on my pontoon boat-
I would really love to have a T&T switch on the motor since i can't see the motor when useing the switch on the control lever from the ground. Wondering if there was a "kit" or someway to add one? Appreciate help -----

You need a single pole, double throw switch (SPDT). Get a marine one and wire it in. A lot of them are square, so you will need to make a square hole in the motor cowling. Alternatively a round one is easier to install/

I would recommend something like this. Works with your three wire system and you can mount it to the transom or the side of the motor.

Re: Johnson T&T switch question

Just order a pan mounted switch from a later model Johnson or Evinrude

This is kinda what i was thinking might be availible- I'll hit Academy today & see if they carry one. If not i'll go with the switch - I'm that guy who never orders anything he can hold in his hand & play with today

This could help
Item #:
TTC-1-DP
SKU #:
0008512006

those are academy's numbers for the switch. In case you have to ask for help finding it.

Re: Johnson T&T switch question

OK, found the switch at my local Johnson dealer & it works great
TTC-1-trim-switches-jack-plate-switches-push-button-switch-transom-trim-remote-trim-switch-CLOSE.jpg
BUT--I first installed it by splicing in a few inches from the T&T motor & ran the hotwire to the main cable on the starter selenoid---It took about 3 seconds to melt the wires (18" supplied) half way back to the switch! After trying several other places on the hot side I tryed adding more wire & tieing into the 3 wires up close to the switch on my control box---Bingo- works perfect! Can someone explain why it wouldn't work at the pump motor but worked 4' further from the pump motor tieing into the same wires?????
Thanks for the help guys, it'll sure make life easier !

The tilt motor draws upwards of 30 amps. To handle the current the motor has a pair of relays to switch the power ( they also reverse it). The switch on the control only controls energizing the relays so those wires only carry 2 or 3 amps.

here is a simplified picture of atypical tilt trim circuit

Re: Johnson T&T switch question

Makes sense- Forgot about the "black box" between control box & motor. Been wiring 12V stuff since 8 tracks but sure don't know everything -- Thats why i hang here!
Thanks---
