Johnson throttle friction adjustment?

Can anybody help me figure out how to tighten the friction on a 2001 Johnson Ocean Pro? The manual shows a screw in the throttle handle that is called "throttle friction", but turning it seems to do nothing. It feels as though maybe it is stripped or isnt catching whatever it is supposed to catch on to increase the friction. Right now the throttle is so loose that it is difficult to start or change speeds without throwing somebody overboard. Also changing speeds in rough water is difficult to do because the throttle is so loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Johnson throttle friction adjustment?

Could very well be stripped. There should be two bolts that go through the unit that attach it to the boat. If they are removed the throttle assembly can be split open. You can take a peek inside or attempt to remove the friction screw from the outside (I don't know if it is captive but I bet it is). Worse comes to worse if it is stripped you might have to re-tap for a larger bolt. I am sure the screw is stainless steel and the housing is aluminum. Chances are the aluminum gave way.

Bob
