I have a 89 - 88 spl while at the shop the mechanic showed me the cover to the electric motor had a hole rusted thru it. It works fine so he sealed it but warned it may not last long and would cost over $300 to replace. After further inspection it looked to me that there was a cap held on by three phillips head screws. The question is can the cap be replaced and where would I find one? The numbers on the unit are 17D02 and 186108. Thanks for any input.

nope<br /> its a motor replacement. the tilt unit needs to be removed or at a minimum the port bracket has to be removed. if its a saltwaater motor a oxy/scetylene rig will be mandatory. if he can do the job on a saltwater motor for 300 go for it. the upper pin can be a beast to get out and the six bolts that hold the unit to the brackets are tough to drill if ya break them. then ya got the 3 1/4x20 screws that hold the tilt motor to the unit :) :) . saltwater is great stuff :) :)
