Are there any Johnson Seahorse experts out there? What are the differences between the TN-26, 27 and 28 series seahorses? What parts interchange between the various models? I?m wanting to get a spare powerhead unit to rebuild over the winter for my TN-28 and I want to make sure I buy the right one if the powerhead is from a different model. Thanks in advance for any help!

I think the 27 & 28 are pretty much the same. The 26 has a different ignition system that uses a different crankshaft and driveshaft. I'm sure one of the folks on here will give you more pointers as to differences. You might also try the aomci.org site, do a search, lots of info about these old jewels over there.

If you have a TN 28, stick with that or a TN 27 as a parts motor, to get the most bang for your buck.

I have a pile of TN 27s and TN 28s, and cannot think off hand of any differences mechanically.

Do you have any to part out? I could use a neutral switch/lever if you have one laying around....

Google OMC 302364. Several out there, maybe after market, kinda pricey ~$30-60

One part that has changed over the years is the lower crankshaft seal assembly. The ignition is another as already stated.

What lever are you looking for, the one on the tank or the one in the lower unit? I might have one for the lower unit, would have to do a dig to see for sure.

It is the one on the tank - mine cracked and is shot. Bonzo - thanks for the part # tip - that opened up a few ads for me to look at!

Just so you know, the flywheel was changed when they switched from the tower type points to the OMC universal points on the TN-27. Because of that, the starter assembly also changed, even though you can't really see the difference. When my TN-26 was restored with a TN-28 block, the original starter assembly wouldn't fit and we couldn't figure out why. We ended up using the TN-28 starter assembly and it fit like a glove.
