I Have a 1989 Johnson 40. The motor will not lift up but about 6 inches. The Release cable's end is broke off but the cable will still move a slight amount by pulling it with 2 sets of pliers. Any Ideas?

Re: Johnson Tracker manual tilt

I assume you have the gas assisted tilt trim system? The replacement cable for my 48 Evinrude was about $62. If you just need to get the engine up to work on it you can do it manually at the position where the cable screws into the lower fitting. I can only assume your model is similar to mine... Remove the black plastic nut, then gently pry up on the base of the stainless fixture with a small flat blade of some sort, the engine will then be free to lower or raise to the position you desire. Better to have help doing this. Trust me. You pry, a friend raises the motor.

Re: Johnson Tracker manual tilt

I had a similar problem on my Johnson 48 and got away with just replacing the plastic 'nut' that attaches to the lever. Think they were about $2 at the local marine store. If you're cable itself is broken and there is no thread at the end the Gil is on the $$.

When mine was broken, it took a little time to adjust how far to screw it in. Takes a decent amount of pulling to get that cylinder to release tho.

Good luck.

Bill
