OMC Palse Pack Problem
i just acquired a johnson 115hp two stroke outboard it has been sitting for 4 years outside in all weathers.
When i first tried to start it nothing happend so did some reading and was told about the kill switch but could not locate the black wire with yellow tracer so disconnected wire not related to the motor and i could hear the palse pack pulsing after several try's at startig smoke started to come from the pack. i have got a new pack but before i install it can anyone tell me if it was probably a problem with the pack or was it likely to be a problem with something else to cause the pack to smoke.
any help would be appreciated.

I would start by trying to turn it by hand.Pull plugs first and squirt some fog or penetrating oil in each cyl.Charlie

Welcome aboard!

What year is this motor? A model number will help a lot.

Re: Johnson V4 115hp

Well some good news, not so good and some possibly worse news.

The good news is that its a 1970, a year newer than you thought. Good deal!

The not so good news is that its still a 115. It didnt gain 1 horsepower, but thats OK. :)

Seriously, thats a battery CD ignition. The kill switch and other related posts were probably talking about 1973 and newer magneto CD ignitions. Yours has to have 12 volts to the pack or amplifier to start the motor.

Now the worse news. If it started smoking, thats never a good sign.

Good luck!

Re: Johnson V4 115hp

You want to take it nice and easy here & not smoke the new pack. Kind of expensive, right?

Basically, you need a wiring diagram. We can help you a bit, but if the last pack literally made smoke...and noises, something is very wrong with the way it's hooked up.

1970 115, so you SHOULD have the sensor-style (rather than points-style) battery CD ignition. Did you determine which you needed when you got the new pack?

yes, i do have the sensors and as far as i know the wiring is original it dosen't look as if it has been change in any way and the motor was running good when last used "apparently"
