Picked up Johnson V4AL-14 on a boat with trailer yesterday, seems to run very well, has forward and reverse, but is not spitting out cooling water anywhere that I can see.

How big of a job is it to change the impellor, or whatever else it needs?
Anybody got any tips, photos, recommended videos, etc?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Thanks, have a great evening.

I am guessing that is an early V4 motor. Say early 60's.

If she spits out the hole in the rear of the motor, after a while, the thermostat is working. It should read about 143* F. There is no telltale.

I have seen water out that hole in the extension, but never understood it's purpose. Of course I had a fat-fifty. A unique motor to be sure.

The circled hole is a drain hole for the drive shaft isolation tube. Yes, water will come out there but it is not an indication of cooling.

That is great information, what does a guy look for then to indicate that the pump is working and that cooling water is circulating?
My very limited experience with outboards has been with 4-1/2 to 25 HP Mercury units where there is an obvious stream of water out the side to show this.
Thanks.

A temperature switch is shown in parts book.----Test the hot light.-----Better yet is a buzzer for overheat.-----Install a new impeller now.
