I recently Got a 1989 Johnson VRO ( this is the Newest out Board I have owed) I am used to mixing oil in my Gas and have owned 2 differnt mercs one a 1965 50 hp (still working)the other 1972 115hp inline6 I am rebuilding .The Motor seems great quiet smoth powerful but I am not to sure how reliable this VRO feature is I used over 10 galons (imp gal) of gas and not much oil. in fact it looks as if no oil was used but that could be the pitch of the boat .
How ould I know its working? is there a guage I monitor it with.

Make a mark on the oil tank at the present oil level and keep an eye on it for it going down. If you ran it that long and it did not blow up, it's working... Be sure to maintain the VRO per the Manuals instructions...

Safest thing to do is to pre-mix your gas/oil 50:1 and mark the oil level in the oil tank. Go out and burn a tank of fuel and then check the oil tank and see if you used any oil.

I was thinking of disconnecting the vro and using pre mixed fuel simply i am use to it an trust it .I am sure the engine is getting some oil or it would be quite my merc's were alot louder ,not sure if thats the age or disighn .I'll try to mark the oil tank but difficult to read bobing in the waves

hello

if the vro pump is the original just replace it. the pump does not live forever and when it fails bad things happen. unless you make your living fixing them :) :) .
good luck and keep posting

I disconnected my vro om my 1989 110hp.
and it just gives me peace of mind to know that if the motor blows because of bad or no oil that it is my own faulth and not of a stupid defective oil pump.
it is a litle more work mixing but i dont have to worry and hoping if the vro works propper.
if you dont trust it disconect it.
i must say that before i disconected the vro i never had a problem with it bud if you get a problem with it you will know.

reeldutch

Re: Johnson VRO 120hp

Is there a way to measure the pressure of the oil pump? I am still considering bypassing it and going pre mixed gas like I have been for years .but If I could oversee the oil injection working I would leve it alone

Re: Johnson VRO 120hp

I have a 1985 115HP with VRO. In 18 years it has not given me a bit of trouble. However, it doesn't seem to be using as much oil as it used to. Can someone tell me if/what I should be looking at replacing?
