Johnson water control valve bypass

I bought a 1986 Johnson 120 hp looper.motor runs great but the water control valve is leaking.part has been discontinued. I've read on here can bypass by using the thermostat covers,gasket and springs from a 1989 70 hp.does anyone have those parts numbers and by doing this do I take the new thermostats out I bought for that motor and use the 70 hp thermostats or do I just replace the covers and gaskets.
